The Ndoro’s influence on contemporary jewellery and textiles by Petronella Tayamika Mahachi

The Ndoro was traditionally a symbol of rank, authority and wealth in Zimbabwe, it dates back to the 15th and 16th century.
Ndoro Symbol
It has influenced the work of Zimbabwean artists like Sue Chadwick and Patrick Mavros. Sue Chadwick’s range of accessories includes bracelets, cufflinks, earrings, necklaces, pendants, rings and key rings. Patrick Mavros is a Zimbabwean artist and sculpture that is very passionate about all things African; this is also evident in his work. The Ndoro shape is used in many of his jewellery designs including chains, pendants and earrings. Some of Mavros’s loyal customers include Barak Obama, His Majesty King of Spain, The Duchess of Cambridge, Denzel Washington, Prince Harry and JK Rowling.
