Beverly Johnson has a place in fashion history, not only as the first black model to be featured on the cover of American Vogue , but also for paving the way for black women the world over to feel part of the fashion industry. Johnson began modelling while a student at the Northeastern University of Boston, receiving assignments for Vogue and Glamour despite having no portfolio. Fashion Editors were impressed by her fresh beauty. When Scavullo photographed her for the Vogue cover in August 1974, the magazine was taking a chance . Little did they know that its circulation for the month would double. Johnson said at the time "The participation of black models..... is unjust in proportion to the amount of money that is put into the industry by black people"Her career spunned the 1970s and early 1980s and also included film roles, records and two books. Today Beverley Johnson is still very much a businesswoman and regurlary attends fashion events. She now spends a lot of time on her Beverley Johnson brand which includes a great range of hair and beauty products.
