John Galliano’s debut haute couture collection for Christian Dior

1997 was a year in which a host of designers looked to Africa for new ways of combining colours and patterns.It is in this year that Paul Gaultier created an African inspired collection, John Galliano also created a collection for Dior that had been inspired by the dress style of the Masai. But more than simply appropriating the African traditional dress, the fashion industry seemed to finally take a sincere interest in getting things right. The clothes that came out of this new black chic were far more sophisticated and more subtly ethnic than such attempts had been at black style in the past.
